The phrase “adopt, don’t shop” is well-known among animal enthusiasts. Unfortunately, though, every year, about 6.3 million animals in the US end up in shelters.
Even more shocking is the fact that each year, around 920,000 of them are put to death. With a 50% adoption rate and an annual intake of 140,000 animals, Louisiana receives 70,000 animals in shelters around the state that need homes.
You decide to save a life when you choose to adopt a pet from your neighborhood Louisiana animal shelter.
There will surely be a four-legged friend out there for you because so many animals need loving homes that have been abandoned, neglected, or abused. To start the adoption process, visit one of Louisiana’s many animal shelters right now.
Biggest Animal Shelters in Louisiana
10. Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO)
ARNO joins a no-kill non-profit organization that runs a shelter and focuses on helping and rescuing homeless and abandoned animals in the New Orleans region.
Their 92% live release rate is astounding. Only a very small percentage of the animals in care are put to sleep because of illnesses that make their quality of life unsustainable.
It is simple to submit an online adoption application and schedule a meeting with your future best friend before moving forward with the adoption process.
9. Cane Haven Rescue
Cane Haven Rescue, based in New Orleans, is committed to saving, educating, and placing dogs in loving homes. Their non-profit organization promotes spay and neuter campaigns, adoption efforts, and animal welfare.
Until they are adopted, all of the animals are housed in foster homes. On the website, you can fill out a questionnaire about adoption. Any pet you adopt from Cane Haven Rescue comes with a complete physical examination, current vaccines, spaying or neutering, and a microchip.
8. Hope & Hearts 4 Paws
This charity organization offers the essential care that several neglected, abused, or abandoned dogs in southern Louisiana require.
Hope & Hearts 4 Paws runs foster homes for its animals until they find a good match, relying only on donations from its supporters. On the website, you can see every dog that is available for adoption and submit an online adoption application.
7. Jefferson SPCA – Jefferson Protection & Animal Welfare Services (JPAWS)
Two shelters run by the Jefferson JPAWS are located in the Louisiana region on the East and West banks of the parish. By saving and guarding them until they find their forever homes, they focus on spreading awareness and advocating for all animals.
JPAWS takes in over 100,000 animals annually, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other adorable animals. While 25% of their animals are purebred, many more lovely mixed-breed animals are looking for new homes.
6. Louisiana SPCA
To assist in caring for and protecting frightened animals until their owners can be found or a new home adopts them, the Louisiana SPCA has many locations across the state.
They are entirely independent of other SPCAs or Humane Societies and rely solely on donations.
Animals are adopted with a clear medical history, a completed spay or neuter, all required vaccines, and registered microchips. If you’re considering getting a new dog for your home, they also offer a bag of food and a discount on obedience training.
5. Mid-City Mutt Mamas
The Mid-City Mutt Mamas women concentrate on saving displaced and abandoned pets in the Louisiana region.
Their goal is to rescue animals in difficult situations, but they hope they won’t need to one day. In their opinion, every puppy, dog, and elderly animal should be given a second opportunity at a secure future and a loving home.
On the website, you can see every dog that is available for adoption. You can also download the adoption form, which you may submit there to find your new furry family member.
4. Northshore Humane Society
The Northshore Humane Society in Covington is open for adoptions from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday through Friday and from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday.
It only takes a few minutes to complete an application, and you may hear from an adoption counselor about your preferred animal in as little as 48 hours.
All of the adoptable pets are either spayed or neutered and come with all required shots and health examinations. They will also have a microchip, and new owners will get extra perks like discounted veterinary care, boarding, and a 30-day trial of pet health insurance.
3. Take Paws Rescue
To rescue and rehabilitate dogs so they can find their forever homes, Take Paws Rescue depends on the time and effort of volunteers in New Orleans.
Although they are located in Louisiana, they have the potential to handle adoptions from other states, but specific conditions must exist to do so.
There needs to be a central office number because Take Paws Rescue relies on volunteers and foster homes to run. Alternatively, you can email them your inquiries or submit an online adoption form for one of their numerous pets under care.
2. Animal Rescue New Orleans
After Hurricane Katrina, Jane Garrison and two of her close friends established ARNO, a 501(c)(3) non-profit grassroots volunteer-based organization.
Jane was one of the first people from outside the area to arrive at the “rescue headquarters” at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, LA, where rescue operations during Hurricane Katrina were being conducted on the ground.
Jane collaborated with hundreds of volunteers to save thousands of animals before Lamar-Dixon closed its doors in October 2005. The talented and dedicated group of volunteers and employees from all around the country that worked tirelessly to provide immediate assistance to displaced pets and their families was brought together by Jane.
ARNO is still working diligently today. Through our sanctuary, more than 10,000 companion animals have found loving homes. Numerous animals still require care, reunification, foster care, and adoption. ARNO relies on philanthropic donations and volunteer labor to stay afloat.
1. Villalobos Rescue Center
In the 1990s, back in California, Villalobos Rescue Center (VRC) started out as a wolf/wolf hybrid rescue. Due to economic factors and significant changes in county legislation that made it practically difficult to operate as a non-profit organization, VRC moved to Louisiana in 2011.
Now in Louisiana, VRC has locations in New Orleans and Assumption Parish, a rural/country region (an hour and a half outside of New Orleans).
VRC is now an all-breed rescue with a continued emphasis on Pit Bulls due to the great need to aid other canines. The Villalobos Rescue Center now takes in many animals throughout the year and takes care of them.
