Dear [name of the recipient]

It is important to consider the extraordinary difficulties that employees have endured during one of the most trying [number of months] months in recent memory as we observe Labor Day in [mention the year]. We have all been put under a great deal of stress as workers due to the collapse of our economies, the closing of our schools, and the disruption of our daily lives. All workers, including the more than [number of members] IFPTE members who are represented, have worked hard to protect themselves from COVID-19 while simultaneously squeezing by financially and caring for their families.

The ironic part is that before the pandemic, these employees and services were far too frequently taken for granted. Indeed, we now have a newfound appreciation for the workers who have supported us throughout our lives. Most of us now know that when we go to the grocery store, the person scanning our groceries or filling our prescriptions is doing so while putting their own safety in danger; in the past, we just walked in, grabbed our groceries, and departed without giving it any thought. The realization that “All Work Has Dignity” is the one good thing to come out of this pandemic.

As trade unionists, we know that many business owners and politicians with a pro-corporate agenda only see employees as a cost. They think that employees are disposable. For instance, the Business Roundtable, which represents corporate CEOs, had a Statement of Purpose from [year] to the present in which it stated that a corporation’s principal purpose is to serve shareholders. As workers, as a union, and as a labor movement, we must never lose sight of the fact that it is our duty to keep on organizing and increasing union density to make corporations realize that it is their workforce, not the shareholders or the CEOs, who is accountable for the company’s profits. It is the employees who will share in those profits.

The value of employees and their significance to our survival is the one thing that has been evident to our society throughout this battle. The thousands of IFPTE-represented medical professionals who have been working nonstop to save lives; the retail, supermarket, and vital service workers who come to work every day to give us the food, medications, and supplies we all require to survive; the government employees who ensure that our most vulnerable citizens continue to receive essential public services; the street cleaners and garbage haulers who keep our streets clean; the energy providers who keep the lights on for us; the teachers who instruct our children; the transportation providers who get us from point A to point B… These employees, along with countless others, risk their health and safety to help others.

No work is insignificant, as [mention the names] observed. All work that improves humanity has dignity and significance, and it should be done with meticulous quality. While corporate boards, CEOs, and misguided politicians seem to be unaware of this feeling, society as a whole is more aware of it now than it has been in a long time.

Many of us will spend Labor Day with our families, participate in parades or other festivities, have cookouts, watch baseball games, or just hang out with our loved ones and coworkers. Let’s remember that “All Work Has Dignity” and take a moment to “thank” a worker as we go.
